About

Thomas Wolf Contemporary Artist

I am a native of California, returning to reside here in 1999 after careers in the military, theater, historic building restoration and writing.  I have been dedicated to painting since 1992.  In over 20 years I have taught myself to paint by studying great works from around the world that exemplify the styles and techniques of every age, by reading artists’ first-hand accounts of their own experience and processes and by going to the easel each day to develop the discipline and confidence of a master painter.

I paint to create an intuitive mnemonic for quantum theory with the intent of helping future generations grasp the workings of nature as we now understand it; a thing which too few on the planet can claim.

My technique of transparent layering and complex color mixing produces visual richness and depth that is best seen in person.  My gallery is my home and studio.  Contact me to chat about my work, about painting or to come by.  I’m located in the Inner Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco, very close to the de Young Museum.  Visits can be arranged most days.

  1. Hi, Tom! Yesterday we formally met each other at the de Young. Just checked out your website and the really technical, cool pieces have as representation of your work. I can see where your high-level mathematical background comes into play. I really enjoyed perusing your site! Maryhelen Greaves

    1. Thanks. I try to reach a balance between precision and gesture. Emergent complexity arises from simple systems when component creation allows individual adaptation to localized conditions.

    2. I am very interested in your artwork! The Simplexity series and the Manifold series works are amazing! I inherited a couple paintings of yours, White Raven and Wounded Crow, that now adorn the wall in my living room, and are a major conversation starter. Thanks for the inspiration uncle, and please let me know how I can purchase more works!
